Paatal Bhubaneshwar is a huge temple complex supposedly retrieved by Adi Shankaracharya in around 8th or 10th Century A.D. A drive form Chaukori leads you there. As you reach there, a small tunnel like entrance is there, the width of which is only a little more than average human width. Wires pass from outside through same entrance. This entrance is down sloping and almost 25 metres long, and quite slippery.

As you reach the lower end of the tunnel, suddenly, you will see a huge and high, hall like cave lit by bulbs at a few places, and floor being wet and slippery. The Sadhu there will guide you and tell a number of stories about the various Gods and other deities there. There are replica of a number of important pilgrim places in India. Huge and long Stalactites and Stalagmites are likened to be the hair of Shiva and the water seeping through them is likened to be the Ganges. There are many other small caves linked to the main entrance. The place is amazing and simply great and NOT TO BE MISSED AT ABY COST. The pillars in the main hall are supposed to be elephant feet and again many stories are weaved around it. You wont get out of this cave complex before an hour, listening to the various legends. You will soon start wondering, how man created such a huge cave complex, in the first place. And that too some thousands years back, when there were not many tools available. You are bound to be astonished. Really.

While you follow the sadhu there, be careful about the floor. It's wet and slippery due to ground water seeping and it's very easy to slip and break a bone. Photography is prohibited inside the cave complex.
