Bageshwar is situated at the confluence of the rivers Gomati and Sarayu. A big town, with a population of more than a lakh, Bageshwar is a trading place.

HISTORY:
Legend says that Sarayu and Gomati, loved Lord Shiva. But Lord Shiva had more affection for Sarayu. So he announced a contest between them, as to who searches him first, gets him. He was hiding at the place of Bageshwar. Gomati reached there and was about to find him. But Shiva, on seeing Gomati, immediately assumed the form of a Bagh (Leopard). So Gomati kept searching for him, and in the while Sarayu reached there and Shiva reverted to his normal form. Hence he is worshiped here as Bageshwar (Leopard God). And even today, river Gomati flows zigzag searching for Shiva, while Sarayu flows straight.

PLACES OF INTEREST:

1. Temple of Bageshwar : Situated on a hillock, one can go there by a vehicle. The temple commands a superb view of the confluence of Gomati and Sarayu, as well as the entire green and farmed town of Bageshwar, with the backdrop of the Himalayan ranges of Trisul and Nanda Devi. A cricket ground as well as a number of schools can be seen from here.

EXCURSIONS:

1. Bageshwar is the last town before reaching Song, from where trekking can be done for Pindari, Kafni, and Sunderdhunga Glaciers. Of the three, Sunderdhunga Glacier is the most awesome. The first two glaciers can be approached by novices, but the Sunderdhunga Glacier is a slightly difficult one and requires experience.
